Fuel shortages in Niger Republic are beginning to ease after Nigeria stepped in with emergency petroleum supplies.
Hundreds of petrol tankers have been making their way across the border, helping to lower fuel prices and stabilize the situation.
Niger turned to Nigeria for help after weeks of crippling fuel shortages that saw petrol prices skyrocket. Despite recent diplomatic tensions, a delegation from Niger met with Nigerian officials in Abuja to negotiate an emergency fuel deal. As a result, Nigeria approved the delivery of 300 petrol trucks to its northern neighbor.
The situation had become dire in Niger, with fuel prices reaching around N10,000 per litre. Long queues formed at petrol stations, and transport costs soared, affecting daily life and businesses. With Nigeria’s intervention, prices have now dropped to around N5,000 per litre, bringing relief to residents and transport operators.
Local traders and border officials have confirmed the steady movement of fuel tankers from Nigeria into Niger. Though the Nigeria Customs Service has not officially commented on the situation, security sources have verified the deliveries. Residents in Agadez and other border towns say the fuel supply is improving, though queues at petrol stations remain.
Many Nigeriens have expressed gratitude to Nigeria for providing critical support at a time of need. Commercial drivers operating between the two countries say the fuel supply has eased their operations, making travel more affordable again. Some see the move as a sign of deep historical and economic ties between the two nations.
Security officials monitoring the fuel shipments say all necessary documents and checks are in place to ensure smooth cross-border movement. The agreement is believed to be part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to strengthen diplomatic ties and encourage Niger’s re-engagement with ECOWAS.
As fuel availability continues to improve, both countries will watch closely to see whether this emergency supply deal leads to a lasting resolution of their recent tensions.
