US Lawmakers Push to Halt Weapons Sales to Israel

WASHINGTON DC, UNITED STATES - MAY 8: US representatives Rashida Tlaib and Cori Bush (not seen) hold a press conference with the student representatives of George Washington University (GWU), after their solidarity encampment with Palestine was raided by the police, in front of the Congress building in Washington D.C., United States on May 8, 2024. A group of US legislators has introduced a proposal aimed at stopping the Trump administration from moving forward with major arms sales to Israel.

They argue that the weapons are contributing to civilian deaths in Gaza and may be violating international law.

The legislation, led by Democratic Representatives Pramila Jayapal and Rashida Tlaib, seeks to block the sale of billions of dollars worth of military equipment. The proposed restrictions would prevent the transfer of thousands of powerful bombs, guided munitions systems, and armored bulldozers, which have been used in demolishing Palestinian homes.

This effort comes as Israel’s military operations in Gaza continue, with reports estimating over 50,000 Palestinian casualties since October 2023. Lawmakers behind the resolution say the US should not supply offensive weapons while accusations of human rights violations mount.

The Biden administration has defended the arms deals, arguing that they are crucial for Israel’s defense. Republicans, who hold a majority in Congress, have strongly backed the weapons sales, making it unlikely that the Democratic-led proposal will pass.

The push to block the sales is based on the Arms Export Control Act, which gives Congress oversight of foreign military deals. However, past presidents have bypassed similar measures by citing emergency national security concerns.

The debate comes as global scrutiny of Israel’s actions in Gaza increases. International courts are investigating allegations of war crimes, and Israel is facing accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice.
