New Face Enters Ivory Coast Presidential Race

Côte d’Ivoire’s main opposition party has officially chosen Tidjane Thiam as its candidate for the country’s upcoming presidential election, marking a major step in his political journey.

The announcement sets the tone for what could be a tense and competitive election season in a country still shaped by past political instability.

Thiam was selected by the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire (PDCI), one of the country’s oldest political groups. The decision was made during a party meeting where members backed his candidacy, making him the official face of their campaign going into the 2025 election.

The event took place in Abidjan, the economic capital, where hundreds of party members gathered. The atmosphere was energetic, with supporters expressing strong belief in Thiam’s ability to bring change. The party, once dominant in the nation’s politics, is hoping to regain power after years in the opposition.

Thiam’s name had been discussed for months, given his background in finance and leadership roles at major global institutions. Many in the country see his experience as a fresh direction, especially among voters frustrated with the current administration. The PDCI believes his return to the political scene can connect with citizens looking for a new approach.

His rise in the race comes as Côte d’Ivoire prepares for a tight contest, with current President Alassane Ouattara’s future plans still unclear. The next presidential vote is expected to draw widespread attention, both inside and outside the country, due to its potential to shape the nation’s direction for years.

Thiam is expected to campaign on reform, unity, and development. His team has already started planning a national tour to meet communities and listen to their concerns directly. He faces a tough road, as the political field remains divided and the ruling party holds strong influence.

As preparations for the election continue, many Ivorians are watching closely to see how this new candidacy will shift the political landscape. The PDCI hopes Thiam’s leadership can breathe new life into their party and offer voters a clear alternative.
