Manchester United paid tribute to former academy star Joe Thompson, who passed away at the age of 36 after a brave battle with cancer.
Thompson, who joined the Red Devils’ academy at just nine years old, went on to have a successful playing career, making over 200 appearances for Rochdale.
“Everyone at Manchester United is deeply saddened at the passing of our much-loved friend and Academy alumni, Joe Thompson, at the age of 36,” Manchester United said in a statement.
“Everyone who knew Joe thought he was a great man, whose personality lit up every room he entered despite the pain he had endured in his life. We’ll always remember him and send our deepest condolences to his wife, Chantelle, and two daughters.”
Thompson was diagnosed with cancer for the third time last year, with stage four lymphoma that had spread to his lungs. Despite his health struggles, he remained a popular figure in the football world, working as a pundit on MUTV and holding an ambassadorial role.
Rochdale Football Club, where Thompson spent the majority of his career, also paid tribute to their former player. “Rochdale Football Club is devastated to learn of the passing of Joe Thompson,” the club said. “Joe, who had been bravely battling cancer for a third time, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, with his family by his side.”
The club added, “We first knew Joe primarily as a talented footballer, but we would soon grow to adore his loving, infectious personality. He faced every battle head-on, both on and off the pitch. His journey and indomitable spirit have been an inspiration for everyone who has been touched by his story.”
Thompson’s legacy extends beyond his playing career. He spearheaded the launch of Manchester United’s academy alumni program and raised over £20,000 for further treatment and testing by completing a charity fundraiser titled ‘Walk with me for JT’ ¹.
