Modi and Musk Eye Closer India US Tech Ties

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and tech entrepreneur Elon Musk have once again connected to explore new ground for India-US cooperation in the field of technology.

Their latest discussion builds on an earlier face-to-face meeting in Washington earlier this year and reflects growing interest in aligning their goals on innovation.

The conversation took place over a phone call, with Modi later sharing details through a post on X. He stated that the discussion revisited themes they had already touched on during his visit to the United States. The focus this time was on how both countries could work more closely in emerging technology and digital solutions.

The timing of this call carries weight. India is in the middle of negotiating a trade deal with the United States, seeking to cushion itself against any future tariffs under President Donald Trump’s administration. Strengthening ties in technology and innovation may help India bolster its position as a preferred partner in global trade and tech development.

The call also comes shortly before US Vice President JD Vance’s upcoming four-day visit to India, suggesting that the groundwork is being laid for deeper engagement between the two nations. India has been positioning itself as a rising tech power, and its outreach to American firms and leaders supports that goal.

Musk, who not only leads several major companies but also chairs the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has shown growing interest in India’s market. He has been exploring ways to introduce more of his businesses to the Indian economy, including through partnerships and new infrastructure.

In one of the most recent moves, Musk’s satellite internet firm Starlink has teamed up with two leading Indian telecom firms. The aim is to launch satellite internet services across India, especially in remote areas. However, the plan is still waiting for a green light from Indian regulators before services can begin.

As both leaders push forward, this continued engagement could open doors to new collaborations in areas like digital infrastructure, clean energy, and AI. The Modi-Musk conversation signals a mutual desire to turn strategic dialogue into real-world results, connecting their visions for the future of tech.
