Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s bag was stolen from a Washington, D.C. restaurant on Sunday, April 20.
The thief made off with $3,000 in cash, her driver’s license, passport, DHS access badge, medication, apartment keys, and makeup bag.
The stolen cash was intended to treat her family to dinner and Easter gifts, as her family, including children and grandchildren, were in town. Noem confirmed the incident during the White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, stating, “The matter had not been resolved yet.”
The Secret Service has launched an investigation into the theft, reviewing security camera footage that shows an unknown white male wearing a medical mask stealing her bag. Noem receives Secret Service protection like cabinet officials, and security members were present at the restaurant when the theft occurred.
The incident raises concerns about the security of public officials in Washington, D.C. The Secret Service is working to trace Noem’s financial instruments and prevent unauthorized transactions.
