US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing a federal investigation into ActBlue, the Democratic Party’s primary online fundraising platform, over concerns about illegal foreign donations.
The order instructs the attorney general to examine “allegations regarding the use of online fundraising platforms to make ‘straw’ or ‘dummy’ contributions and to make foreign contributions to US political candidates and committees,” which would violate US election laws.
Republicans have long accused ActBlue of not doing enough to prevent foreign money from entering US elections, although no clear public evidence has been presented. Trump’s move heightens those claims just months before the 2026 midterms.
In response, ActBlue firmly denied any wrongdoing. Speaking to Politico, the platform said it complies fully with all campaign finance laws and offers a secure system exclusively for American donors. ActBlue CEO Regina Wallace-Jones dismissed the executive order as “the next version of the big lie,” referencing Republican claims of widespread election fraud that have repeatedly been discredited.
Previously, Republican Congressman Bryan Steil questioned ActBlue’s vetting processes, leading ActBlue to implement additional measures such as blocking donations from prepaid cards, high-risk countries, and flagged sources. Steil welcomed the changes but said they still fall short.
Democrats sharply criticised Trump’s action, calling it a politically motivated attack designed to weaken their fundraising as campaign season heats up.
