Canadian rapper Tory Lanez is recovering in a California hospital after being stabbed 14 times in a violent prison attack.
The incident took place Tuesday morning at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, where Lanez is serving a 10-year sentence for shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion in 2020.
The assault happened inside one of the housing units at around 7:20 a.m. local time. According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, prison staff responded quickly and gave first aid before Lanez was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
The 32-year-old, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, sustained multiple stab wounds to his back, torso, head, and face. A message posted to his Instagram account stated that both his lungs collapsed due to the injuries, and he was temporarily placed on a breathing machine. The post also said Lanez is now breathing on his own, talking, and thankful to be alive despite the pain.
Officials have not confirmed who carried out the attack or why, but an investigation is underway. The name and condition of the suspected attacker have not been made public, and there’s no word yet on whether the inmate will face additional charges.
Lanez has been behind bars since 2023 after being convicted on three felony gun charges, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm. The charges stem from a high-profile incident in which he shot Megan Thee Stallion after a heated argument as they left a Hollywood party hosted by Kylie Jenner. Megan, whose legal name is Megan Pete, told the court Lanez fired at her feet while yelling at her to dance. She later underwent surgery to remove bullet fragments.
The trial sparked widespread debate within the hip-hop community, dividing fans and fellow artists. Some stars, including 50 Cent and Iggy Azalea, publicly commented on the case, with a few writing to the court to ask for a lighter sentence.
Before his conviction, Lanez had a successful music career with seven U.S. top 10 albums. Despite being incarcerated, he has hinted at new music on the way, teasing an upcoming project titled Peterson.
As of now, Lanez remains hospitalized but in stable condition. Further details on the prison investigation or possible changes to his security arrangements have not been released.
