Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane SONKO has expressed his country’s solidarity with Burkina Faso in its fight against terrorism.
During a 48-hour working visit to Ouagadougou, SONKO met with Burkinabe President Captain Ibrahim TRAORÉ and conveyed a message of support from Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar FAYE.
“We are here to convey a message of absolute support to President TRAORÉ, his entire government, and the people of Burkina Faso in their fight against terrorism,” SONKO said. “It’s delusional to think that this ordeal suffered by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will simply remain within the borders of these countries. No country in the sub-region will be spared by this gangrene if it continues to spread across West Africa.”
SONKO emphasized that Senegal would consider any possibility of collaboration and support to help Burkina Faso combat terrorism. “Senegal, beyond the demonstration of solidarity, will not exclude any form of collaboration to support our brothers in this ordeal,” he added.
The visit also marked the inauguration of the Thomas SANKARA Mausoleum, where SONKO participated in the celebration of the late Burkinabe leader, described as a “great and dignified son of Africa.” SONKO highlighted SANKARA’s impact on patriotic, pan-Africanist, and sovereignist struggles across the continent.
During his meeting with President TRAORÉ, SONKO discussed strengthening cooperation between Senegal and Burkina Faso, building on the existing 20 agreements between the two countries. TRAORÉ reiterated Burkina Faso’s openness to remaining a factor of African unity and collaboration in both economic and security matters.
“I am satisfied and comforted by this hearing with the Head of State,” SONKO said, noting the President’s willingness to continue and strengthen cooperation between the two nations [1].
