The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep concern over the recent armed clashes in Tripoli, Libya, that resulted in loss of life and property damage.
In a statement released on May 17, 2025, Youssouf welcomed the ceasefire and the return of cautious calm but urged all parties to refrain from actions or statements that could further destabilize the fragile security situation.
“All parties must exercise maximum restraint to avoid any actions or statements that could further destabilize the fragile security situation,” Youssouf emphasized, highlighting the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region.
He stressed the need for demilitarizing the capital and supporting efforts to restore civilian order, ensuring the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression in line with international law.
The African Union Commission Chairperson called for national responsibility and engagement in a comprehensive political process to bring an end to Libya’s prolonged transitional phase.

“It is imperative that all stakeholders commit to a comprehensive political process that prioritizes national responsibility and engagement,” he said, underscoring the need for lasting peace and development in Libya.
Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union’s strong support for Libya, urging all stakeholders to commit to the National Reconciliation Charter signed in Addis Ababa in February 2025.
“The African Union reiterates its strong support for Libya and calls on all stakeholders to uphold the commitments made under the National Reconciliation Charter,” Youssouf concluded, emphasizing the importance of unity and cooperation in achieving peace and stability in Libya.
