ABUJA—In a striking session yesterday, Senators linked the alarming rise in banditry and Boko Haram activities to the forthcoming 2027 elections. The discourse, initiated by Senator Shuaibu Isa Lau of the PDP, was supported by Senators Sunday Karimi and Danjuma Goje from the APC, who stressed the need for a closer look at the relationship between these security issues and the electoral process.
Senator Karimi warned of a historical precedent, recalling how similar tensions preceded the 2015 elections. He reported a disturbing trend of kidnappings in his district, raising questions about potential collusion between insurgents and disgruntled military personnel.
“We must probe the underlying motives of these incidents,” he asserted. “We cannot allow selfish political agendas to compromise our nation’s stability.”
Senator Goje reinforced this viewpoint, pointing to a nationwide eruption of violence and advocating for a comprehensive investigation into possible political motivations behind these events.
Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio expressed deep concern over the daily fatalities, calling for increased security measures and a more proactive stance from local authorities. The Senate has urged enhanced surveillance in vulnerable areas and immediate relief provisions for affected communities.
