Obi Mourns Fallen Soldiers, Condemns Killings

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, has donated the sum of N20 million to the flooded victims of Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State.

At least 153 people died in the flood, which also destroyed homes and displaced thousands of residents in the Mokwa LGA of the state.

During his visit on Monday, Mr Obi said the fund was to support the injured victims and bereaved families of the deceased to cushion the effect of the hardship on them.

He also announced the donation of one trailer load of food items comprising rice, maize, and millets to cushion the effect of the disaster on the victims.

While expressing sympathy to the Niger state government over the loss of lives and properties to the flood, Mr Obi reiterated his call for international and national support to ameliorate the sufferings of the victims.

“I pray for the repose of the souls of the departed victims and for God to grant their families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” he said.

Receiving Mr Obi, the deputy governor of Niger, Yakubu Garba appreciated the opposition leader for his kindness and support.

Mr Garba, who represented Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, said the LP presidential candidate had always supported victims of natural disasters.

“We commend Mr Peter Obi for his show of kindness and love for humanity, especially in support of victims of recent natural disasters,” he said.

The devastation came after the Nigerian Metrological Agency (NMA) had warned of possible flash floods in 15 states of the country, including the troubled Niger State.

Earlier, the wife of Niger governor, Fatima Umaru Bago, had visited the victims of the Mokwa flood.

During her visit, she announced a personal donation of N50 million on behalf of herself and her family to support the affected communities.
