2025 Bet Awards: Ayra Starr Makes History as First Nigerian to Win Bet’s Best International Act

Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr has won the Best International Act award at the 2025 BET Awards, marking a significant milestone in her career.

The 21-year-old singer, who was nominated in three categories, including Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and Best New Artist, took home the coveted award in the international category.

Ayra Starr’s win signals growing global recognition for her sound and rise in the music industry.

Despite losing in the other two categories to SZA and Leon Thomas, respectively, her victory in the international category is a testament to her talent and hard work.

Other Nigerian artists, including Tems, Shallipopi, and Rema, were also nominated in various categories, but Ayra Starr stood out as the winner in the international category.

The ceremony was dominated by US acts, with Kendrick Lamar sweeping up five major awards, including Album of the Year and Video of the Year.

The ceremony featured notable moments, including Doechii’s powerful acceptance speech for Best Female Hip Hop Artist, where she highlighted ongoing protests outside the venue and advocated for hope and justice. Blue Ivy Carter, daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z, received the YoungStars Award, while Cynthia Erivo and Denzel Washington won Best Actress and Best Actor, respectively.
