The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has issued a strong condemnation regarding the influx of substandard products into Nigerian markets by importers. Additionally, it cautioned local manufacturers against producing inferior goods for the domestic market.
Dr Ifeanyi Okeke, the Director General of SON, expressed these concerns during a one-day workshop entitled “Growing Businesses Through Standardisation” held in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. Represented by Mrs Talutu Athan, Director of the Corporate Affairs Department, he emphasised that adherence to standards is crucial for economic and industrial development.
The workshop aimed to enhance the knowledge and cooperation of stakeholders regarding standardisation practices essential for business growth. Okeke highlighted the importance of maintaining a strong reputation in today’s economy, noting that consumers are increasingly interested in the production processes behind goods.
“To access premium markets, our products must meet established benchmarks, which are not designed to frustrate producers but to ensure quality,” he stated.
SON remains dedicated to combating substandard goods, as such practices tarnish the reputation of genuine producers. “We cannot achieve this alone; we require your support and partnership,” the SON leader remarked.
He further explained that standards serve as foundational elements for resilience and growth, providing a competitive edge in saturated markets while safeguarding investments and ensuring long-term success.
