The National Association of Jukun Wanu (NAJUWA) has condemned the ongoing violence in Benue State, particularly the killings in Agatu and Idoma communities, as well as the recent incident in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area. In a statement, NAJUWA extended its condolences to the Government and people of Benue State, calling for collective action to end the bloodshed.
“We unequivocally condemn all forms of violence, which run contrary to our values as peace-loving people,” the statement read. However, NAJUWA firmly rejected attempts to implicate the Jukun people in the recurring violence, describing recent allegations as “baseless and inflammatory.”
The association stressed that a recent investigation by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Guma LGA, alongside other security agencies, confirmed the Jukun community’s non-involvement in the Yelwata incident. In fact, members of the Jukun community in Abinsi are providing shelter to some displaced Tiv victims of the violence.
NAJUWA proposed concrete steps toward reconciliation and peace, including supporting President Bola Tinubu’s call for inclusive governance and collaborating with security forces to assist lawful investigations into incidents of violence. The association also suggested appointing a bilingual spokesperson to help correct misinformation and foster interethnic understanding.
“We remain dedicated to peace, justice, and the constitutional rights of all Nigerians,” the statement emphasised, calling on media outlets to verify claims before publishing incendiary narratives and urging communities to reject division and stand united against insecurity.
