KaVontae Turpin, wide receiver and All-Pro returner for the Dallas Cowboys National Football League, was arrested on Saturday, 6th of July, in Texas.
Police records from the Allen Police Department show he was taken into custody on charges related to marijuana possession and unlawfully carrying a weapon.
Turpin was booked into the Collin County Jail and later released on Sunday after posting a $1,500 bond. Authorities charged him with possession of less than two ounces of marijuana, along with a weapon charge.
Texas law treats marijuana possession under two ounces as a misdemeanor. The offense can bring a fine of up to $2,000 and a maximum sentence of 180 days in jail.
The details about the weapon found or the exact nature of the weapons violation have not been made public yet.
The Dallas Cowboys have not released a statement regarding Turpin’s arrest.
The NFL may later consider discipline under its Personal Conduct Policy, but league investigations typically wait until the legal process has concluded.
Turpin, 28, has played a key role for the Cowboys, both as a receiver and return specialist.
Earlier this year, he signed a three-year contract worth $18 million after being named an All-Pro kick returner last season.
In 2024, he recorded 31 receptions for 420 yards and scored twice as a receiver.
He also led the league in kickoff return average with 33.5 yards and became the first player in team history to score a touchdown as a receiver, punt returner, and kickoff returner all in the same season.
This is not Turpin’s first scandal. He played college football at TCU but was removed from the team in 2018 after two domestic violence cases involving the same woman.
As of now, the legal case is ongoing, and no court date has been announced.
