On Sunday, President Donald Trump criticized Elon Musk’s announcement about starting a new political party in the United States, calling the idea unnecessary, ridiculous and confusing.
The comments came just a day after Musk said he planned to create this third party, challenging the traditional two-party system of Republicans and Democrats, to give people another option.
Trump made his remarks while boarding Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey, after a visit to a nearby golf club, as he was heading back to Washington.
Trump argued that the Republican Party is doing well and does not need competition from another party.
He also pointed out that the U.S. has always operated with two main parties, and adding a new one would only complicate politics.
“The Democrats have lost their way, but it’s always been a two-party system, and I think starting a third party just brings about confusion,” Trump told reporters.
Although Musk had supported Trump during the last election campaign, their relationship has grown tense recently, especially over Trump’s decision in government spending issues.
Trump also mentioned that the Musk ally he once chose to lead NASA could have faced problems because of Musk’s business in space, suggesting a possible conflict of interest.
Musk is yet to respond to these statements.
