Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has claimed that Israel tried to assassinate him by launching a airstrike on a location where he was meeting with officials.
The incident reportedly took place during a period of active conflict between the two nations.
In an interview released on Monday, 7th of July, with American media personality Tucker Carlson, Pezeshkian said that while the United States was not involved in the attempt, he believes Israel carried out the operation, targeting the area because they were aware he was present.
The interview came just days after a ceasefire was declared between Iran and Israel, following a violent 12-day conflict that saw casualties and destruction on both sides.
The alleged assassination attempt mounts more tension in a tentative peaceful situation, which is still fragile even after though the conflict has ended, and might complicate further diplomatic associations.
Pezeshkian, newly elected to office, also commented on the state of Iran’s relations with the United States.
Despite the recent events, he said Iran is open to restarting nuclear talks with Washington.
However, he stressed that progress would depend on the rebuilding of mutual trust, which has eroded over years of hostilities and diplomatic breakdowns.
