Vice President Kashim Shettima has disclosed how the former Nigerian president nearly succeeded in impeaching him during his tenure as Borno State Governor.
Shettima recounted that he faced intense criticism during the latter years of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.
In Abuja on Thursday, during the public launch of “OPL 245: Inside Story of the $1.3bn Nigeria Oil Block,” written by former Attorney General Mohammed Adoke, Shettima shared his experiences.
He remarked, “Throughout the final four years of Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency, I was the most vilified figure; I was effectively public enemy number one.”
He further noted, “In select discussions involving key officials—the President, Vice President, Senate President, and House Speaker—there was talk of removing me from my position as governor.
“During one of these meetings, Aminu Tambuwal, the then Speaker of the House of Representatives, bravely informed the President that he did not possess the authority to remove an elected official.
“Despite this, the President remained unconvinced and continued to pursue the matter at the Federal Executive Council.”
