United States Mission in Nigeria has explained that the recent decision to shorten visa validity for many Nigerian nonimmigrant travelers is part of a global process focused on technical and security updates.
The mission addressed growing public concerns on Friday through an official statement shared on its Facebook page.
According to the US, the change is not related to Nigeria’s relationship with international groups such as BRICS, nor does it have any connection to policies onUS Adjusts Nigerian Visa Validity in Line with Global Standards deportees or the adoption of electronic visa systems.
Instead, the US government says the adjustment follows a worldwide assessment of visa procedures and usage by other countries.
The review uses specific benchmarks to strengthen its immigration systems and improve how visas are issued and monitored across the board.
The goal is to support safe and well-regulated travel into the United States.
Despite the change in visa terms, the US Mission restated its commitment to continued cooperation with Nigeria.
It said it is ready to engage with Nigerian officials and agencies to help meet the updated requirements.
The mission described the relationship between both countries as strong and ongoing.
It said efforts are underway to ensure that travel between Nigeria and the United States remains secure, legal, and beneficial for both sides.
This clarification follows public speculation over the reasons behind the reduced visa durations, with some suggesting it was politically motivated.
The US government has now made it clear that the decision is technical in nature and part of a wider international update.
