Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially announced his resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), marking the end of a 26-year affiliation in a letter directed to the Chairman of the PDP’s Jadai Ward in Adamawa State.

In the resignation letter, which has been obtained by Summitpost, the two-time presidential candidate and founding member of the PDP stated, “I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.”
Atiku, who held the position of Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007, expressed his gratitude towards the party while lamenting its current direction: “As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.”
He elaborated, “However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”
The Waziri Adamawa specifically referenced “irreconcilable differences” as the catalyst for his departure, signaling a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
“It is with a heavy heart that I resign,” he stated, wishing the party leadership “all the best in the future.”
This resignation follows Atiku’s unsuccessful presidential campaigns in 2019 and 2023 under the PDP banner. He is now set to lead the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he aims to secure the party’s nomination to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 elections.
