U.S. President Donald Trump has stepped into Brazil’s legal affairs, calling for the immediate dismissal of the trial against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
Trump shared his message on his social media platform, framing the investigation as a politically driven effort to discredit Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro is currently facing legal proceedings in Brazil, where authorities accuse him of attempting to remain in power after losing the 2022 election.
The case, led by the Supreme Federal Court and Justice Alexandre de Moraes, alleges Bolsonaro played a central role in orchestrating a failed effort to block the transfer of power to current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
As the legal process unfolds, Bolsonaro has been subjected to a series of restrictions, including the requirement to wear an ankle monitor, a ban on using social media, and limits on communication with certain individuals, including diplomats.
Trump’s comments follow a visit to Washington by Bolsonaro’s son, Eduardo, who met with U.S. officials to discuss possible sanctions against Brazilian authorities involved in the case.
These meetings appear to have influenced Trump’s public stance, as he also hinted at potential economic consequences if the trial continues.
He mentioned the possibility of a steep import tariff on Brazilian goods beginning in August.
Brazilian President Lula da Silva has responded strongly, accusing Trump of attempting to interfere in his country’s internal matters.
Lula defended the independence of Brazil’s institutions and warned that such threats could damage diplomatic ties between the two nations.
The situation has raised tensions between Washington and Brasília, placing pressure on Brazil’s legal system while sparking concerns over political influence from abroad.
