ABUJA -JULY 21, 2025 The Labour Party (LP), led by Julius Abure, has officially endorsed Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed as its chosen candidate for the upcoming 2027 presidential elections.
This endorsement was confirmed following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Monday, 21st July 2025. The assembly brought together prominent party figures, including members of the National Working Committee (NWC), state chairpersons, and various stakeholders. During the meeting, the party firmly rejected a rival faction’s attempt to establish an “Interim National Working Committee,” deeming such actions illegal and unconstitutional.
In a communiqué endorsed by the NEC, the party reiterated its support for Julius Abure’s leadership, referencing a Supreme Court ruling from April 2025 that affirmed the legitimacy of the party’s national convention held in March 2024 in Nnewi.
Furthermore, the party has ruled out any potential alliances with other political entities ahead of the 2027 elections, committing instead to fortify its achievements from the 2023 elections while independently rebuilding its organisational structures.
Datti Baba-Ahmed previously served as the vice-presidential candidate alongside Peter Obi in the 2023 elections.

**RESOLUTIONS ADOPTED AT THE NEC MEETING OF THE LABOUR PARTY ON MONDAY, 21st JULY 2025**
The NEC convened at the National Secretariat in Utako, Abuja, attended by National Working Committee members, party officials, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, state chairpersons, and other co-opted members as per Article 13 (A) of the Party Constitution.
The following resolutions were unanimously approved:
1. The NEC condemned the recent meeting held in Transcorp on 18th July 2025, disassociating itself from the outcomes and rejecting the rebranding of the illegal Caretaker Committee as an Interim National Working Committee.
2. The NEC asserted that no amount of rebranding can legitimise illegal actions, emphasising that the renaming does not change its inherent illegality.
3. The meeting contravened the Party’s Constitution, as only the National Secretary, with the Chairman’s approval, has the authority to convene meetings, violating both Article 14 (4) (B) and Section 82 (1) (2) (a) of the Electoral Act 2022.
4. The NEC disassociated itself from the meeting and its resolutions.
5. The NEC affirmed that there is no leadership vacuum within the Party, having conducted its National Convention on 27th March 2024 in accordance with the party’s Constitution and the Electoral Act, validated by the Supreme Court on 4th April 2025. The NEC calls on the Honourable Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, to adhere to the Supreme Court ruling.
6. The NEC calls upon all members and supporters to disregard the recent meeting and its results.
7. The NEC reaffirmed confidence in Barrister Julius Abure’s leadership and urged party members to respect and follow its lawful directives.
8. The NEC approved the scheduling of State, Local Government, and Ward Congresses as directed by the National Working Committee in compliance with the party’s Constitution.
9. The NEC reiterated that the Labour Party will not enter into any coalition for the 2027 elections, believing that the coalition formed in 2023 remains superior. The party is committed to rebuilding and consolidating the gains achieved in the last election cycle, standing distinct in its ideology and solutions to Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.
10. The NEC commended Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed for his commitment to the party’s leadership and his ambition for the 2027 presidential election.
