Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku has officially received his Ghanaian passport, marking an important step in his journey to reconnect with his African heritage.
According to Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, Doku’s long-held desire to formally connect with his roots has finally been fulfilled.
“Jérémy Baffour Doku receives a Ghanaian passport for the first time. This was the wish of Jérémy and his family when they called on me last week — glad we successfully delivered chip-embedded passports today,” Minister Ablakwa shared on social media.
The 23-year-old footballer, born in Antwerp, Belgium, to Ghanaian parents David and Belinda Doku, has always maintained a strong connection to his heritage.
Doku’s decision to secure dual citizenship reflects a broader trend among second-generation diaspora athletes who are eager to embrace their cultural heritage alongside their professional commitments.
Doku’s journey to reconnect with his roots is evident in his recent actions. During his off-season stay, he immersed himself in Ghanaian culture by visiting the Cape Coast Slave Castle and receiving blessings from Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the revered Asantehene, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
“This significant development confirms Jérémy Baffour Doku’s commitment to fully reconnect with Ghana despite playing for Belgium. I wish him the very best in his illustrious career,” Minister Ablakwa concluded, highlighting Doku’s enduring bond with Ghana.
