Deadly Bus Crash in Andes Leaves 15 Dead, Dozens Injured in Peru

At least 15 people have died and around 30 others were injured after a bus accident in the Andes Mountains of Peru.

The crash happened on Friday as the vehicle was traveling from Lima to the city of La Merced.

The bus, operated by Expreso Molina Líder Internacional, veered off the road in the Palca district of Junin region and plunged into a ravine.

The impact was severe, with the double-decker bus landing upside down near a river and splitting in half. Authorities said more than 60 people were on board at the time of the crash.

Health officials from Tarma and Junin confirmed that emergency crews were working to identify the 15 bodies recovered from the site.

Medical teams were also tending to the injured, some of whom were in serious condition.

Road accidents are frequent in Peru, especially in mountainous areas like the Cordillera de los Andes.

According to police records, more than 3,000 people lost their lives in traffic-related incidents across the country in 2024.

The Attorney General’s Office has previously found that reckless driving, speeding, and poor road conditions are major causes behind these accidents.

In a similar incident earlier this year, a bus in Peru fell into a river, killing six and injuring over 30 passengers.

Investigations into the cause of the most recent crash are ongoing, with early suggestions pointing toward driver error or hazardous road conditions.

Authorities continue to urge caution on Peru’s highland roads, where narrow turns, steep drops, and outdated infrastructure make travel especially dangerous.
