Dolores “Dodie” Osteen, co-founder of Lakewood Church and mother of Pastor Joel Osteen, has passed away at the age of 91.
She died peacefully of natural causes at her home, according to her family.
Dodie Osteen was a familiar and cherished presence at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas.
Over the years, she became known to many as “Mama Dodie,” a comforting figure to the church’s large congregation.
Alongside her late husband, John Osteen, she helped establish Lakewood Church on Mother’s Day in 1959. The church’s first service took place in a former feed store on the outskirts of Houston.
From those early days, the ministry grew to become one of the largest churches in the United States.
She played a constant role in Lakewood’s growth and community for more than six decades. Dodie Osteen became known for her kindness, resilience, and enduring commitment to her faith.
Even in her later years, she remained active within the church and continued to be involved in its spiritual and charitable work.
Joel Osteen, now the lead pastor, confirmed his mother’s passing through social media.
He and his family shared their grief and thanked supporters for their love during this time.
Lakewood Church will continue its regular schedule of services, with the next gatherings taking place on Sunday, August 3, 2025.
Joel Osteen will lead services both in person and online at 8:30 a.m. and again at 11 a.m.
Dodie Osteen leaves behind a lasting legacy not only within her family but also in the lives of many people who found comfort and hope through her and the ministry she helped build.
