Tinubu Govt Pledges To Strengthen Public Institutions, Civil Society Collaboration

The federal government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening collaboration between government institutions and civil society through the Open Government Partnership platform.

Youth minister and state actor co-chair of the OGP in Nigeria, Ayodele Olawande, reiterated this while receiving a delegation from civil society actors and OGP representatives in Abuja on Wednesday.

Mr Olawande said that the critical role of non-state actors in advancing transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in governance could not be overstated.

“The OGP platform has consistently proven to be an effective channel for sustained engagement between ministries and non-state actors. I must commend the OGP secretariat and all stakeholders, both present and absent, whose dedication has been instrumental in advancing this important agenda,” Mr Olawande said.

The minister noted that the guidance, inspiration, and influence of the elder statesmen and civil society leaders were vital to the progress made so far.

“Without their mentorship and encouragement, we would not be where we are today. Their values, wisdom, and steadfast support continue to inspire us. The distractions are overwhelming, and we must redirect our attention to what truly matters. I cannot be anyone else, I can only be myself, but I strive to reflect the values and integrity passed down to us,” he said.

Mr Olawande added that instilling strong values, value-driven leadership, and civic consciousness in the country’s youths was key to building a stronger and more united nation.

Similarly, Aiden Eyakuze, CEO of the OGP Global Support Unit, stated that the current challenges facing governance in the country necessitate a value reorientation among young people.

“What we are witnessing in the country today is not so much a lack of accountability, but a gradual loss of values. Everyone seems to be focusing on the wrong things. The distractions are significant, but the real issues are being overlooked. If I try to be someone else, I will fail. I can only be myself and be true to the principles I uphold.

“The inspiration and support we have received thus far have made us stronger, and for that we are grateful,” he said.

Mr Eyakuze also reiterated the importance of inclusive and consistent engagement between ministries and civil society as the cornerstone of open governance.

The incoming co-chair of the Global OGP, Soji Apampa, commended the minister for his ongoing support and inclusive leadership style.

“We are optimistic about deepening discussions around the future direction of OGP in Nigeria, particularly regarding leadership transition and sustainability. These are critical concerns for the success of the OGP agenda. We sincerely appreciate your leadership in driving the development of the current National Action Plan and your commitment to securing final approval from the President,” he said.
