The White House has announced plans to build a new $200 million ballroom as part of a major upgrade to the East Wing.
The new facility will be located in a 90,000-square-foot extension of the White House and will accommodate around 650 guests, more than triple the capacity of the existing East Room.
This project is being funded by President Donald Trump along with unnamed private donors.
Construction is scheduled to begin in September and is expected to finish before the end of Trump’s current term in January 2029.
For years, Trump has spoken about adding a permanent ballroom to the White House, calling it a more elegant solution than the temporary tents often used for state dinners and other large events.
Until now, the East Room has been the primary venue for formal gatherings, although its limited size has required outdoor tents to host larger groups.
Visual renderings of the project show a luxurious interior with classic architecture, gold accents, chandeliers, and decorative columns designed to match the historic style of the main building.
The revamped East Wing will also house modernized office spaces, with current offices—such as First Lady Melania Trump’s—being temporarily moved during construction.
Officials from the White House stated that the new ballroom will offer a lasting space for future presidential events without compromising the history of the building.
Previous updates under Trump’s administration have included changes to the Rose Garden, the Oval Office, and the installation of large flagpoles.
The ballroom design is intended to reflect the character of the White House while offering a functional improvement for official ceremonies, receptions, and visiting leaders.
