American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson, the reigning 100m world champion, was arrested last weekend following an incident involving her boyfriend at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
According to a police report reviewed by the Associated Press, the 25-year-old athlete was taken into custody on Sunday for a fourth-degree domestic violence offence.
The report stated that Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials alerted airport police after observing a dispute between Richardson and fellow sprinter Christian Coleman.
Security footage reportedly showed Richardson reaching out and grabbing Coleman’s backpack, pulling it away during the confrontation.
Officers evaluated the situation and arrested her based on the video and witness accounts.
The incident took place just a few days before Richardson competed in the opening round of the women’s 100m race at the USA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Despite the arrest, she continued to participate in the event later that week.
There is no confirmation yet on whether formal charges will be filed.
Authorities have not reported any injuries, and neither Richardson nor Coleman has made a public statement about the situation.
Richardson is known for her standout performances on the track and has been one of the most talked-about athletes in recent years.
This incident brings new attention to her off-track life during a crucial part of the competition season.
