A British man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to drown his daughter-in-law during a family holiday in Florida.
Mark Gibbon, 62, from Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, was vacationing with relatives at the Solterra Resort in Davenport, close to Walt Disney World.
Authorities say the incident happened during an argument about his grandchildren while he and his 33-year-old daughter-in-law were in the private swimming pool of their rental home.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Gibbon is accused of pushing the woman underwater multiple times and preventing her from breathing.
A young girl, believed to be a family member, jumped into the pool to try to stop the attack.
Gibbon allegedly only stopped when two sisters staying in a neighboring property told him they had called the police.
He was taken into custody at the scene and booked into Polk County Jail.
He now faces charges of attempted second-degree murder and two counts of battery.
The sheriff’s office confirmed that the woman survived and reported the details of the assault to deputies.
Sheriff Grady Judd issued a statement reminding visitors and residents alike that such behavior would not be tolerated.
He remarked that Gibbon may be spending more time in Florida than he originally planned, but now under arrest.
The case is under investigation, and no additional information has been released regarding the victim’s condition or future court appearances.
