Over 10,000 flight attendants at Air Canada and its subsidiary, Air Canada Rouge, initiated a strike at 1:00 a.m. ET on Saturday, August 16, 2025, following a breakdown in contract negotiations.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) represents the attendants and has been in talks with the airline for several months without reaching an agreement.
The strike has led to the cancellation of all Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flights, affecting approximately 130,000 passengers daily.
The primary issues at the heart of the dispute include demands for higher wages and compensation for unpaid work performed during boarding and deplaning processes.
CUPE argues that the airline’s latest offer, which includes a 38% increase in total compensation over four years, does not adequately address these concerns.
The union also criticizes the proposed ground pay, stating it amounts to only 50% of the standard hourly rate.
In response to the strike, Air Canada has begun a phased wind-down of its operations, canceling over 600 flights in anticipation of the work stoppage.
The airline has advised passengers not to go to the airport unless they have a confirmed ticket on another airline. Affected travelers are eligible for full refunds or can rebook their flights without additional fees.
Passengers are advised to monitor their flight status closely and explore alternative travel arrangements if necessary.
Air Canada recommends checking its website or contacting customer service for updates on cancellations, rebooking options, and refund procedures.
The Canadian government has urged both parties to return to the bargaining table to resolve the dispute and avoid further disruptions. As of now, the strike continues, and the full impact on air travel remains to be seen.
