The Emir of Zuru in Kebbi State, Major General Muhammadu Sani Sami (retd.), has passed away at the age of 81. He died on Saturday night in London after a brief illness, according to a statement released by the Kebbi State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Garba Umar-Dutsinmari.
The late Emir, known as Gomo II, was a revered leader who balanced a fine military career with decades of devoted service to his people. Born on October 24, 1943, Sani Sami enlisted in the Nigerian Army on December 10, 1962, and received his training at the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, United Kingdom. He was commissioned on July 25, 1963.
Sani Sami had a distinguished military career, serving in various sensitive appointments, including Commander of the Brigade of Guards under Murtala Mohammed’s administration and Military Governor of Bauchi State from December 1983 to August 1985. After retiring from the army, he returned to his hometown and became the Emir of Zuru, earning a reputation for firmness, simplicity, and dedication to cultural values.
“The government extends its heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the late Emir, the Zuru Emirate Council, the people of Zuru, and the entire people of Kebbi State. May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus,” the statement read.
The Kebbi State Government described the Emir as a revered leader who made notable contributions to peace and development in Zuru Emirate and the state at large. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
