Zambia is on the cusp of a major breakthrough in its agricultural sector with the near-completion of a $600 million fertilizer plant. The United Capital Fertilizer plant, which is 88% completed, is set to revolutionize the country’s farming industry by producing enough fertilizer to meet local demands and export to neighboring countries.
Once operational, the plant will produce 180,000 tonnes of ammonia and 300,000 tonnes of urea yearly, effectively ending Zambia’s $450 million fertilizer import bill. This significant development is expected to boost agriculture, strengthen food security, and create approximately 2,500 jobs.
Production at the plant is slated to begin by December this year, and its impact will be felt beyond the agricultural sector. The plant will also generate 45MW of electricity, contributing to the country’s energy needs.
