The German Football Federation (DFB) has opened investigations after two German Cup games were disrupted by racist incidents on Sunday.
fficials confirmed that disciplinary action may be taken against the clubs involved, as both matches were overshadowed by abuse from the stands.
In Leipzig, Schalke’s away match against Lokomotiv was halted briefly in the first half when Christopher Antwi-Adjei reported abuse from sections of the crowd.
The referee stopped play for several minutes, and announcements were made inside the stadium urging fans to stop discriminatory behavior.
Antwi-Adjei, who plays for Ghana internationally, later explained that he informed officials during the match. Following the restart, home supporters repeatedly booed him whenever he touched the ball.
Lok Leipzig stated that no further reports were submitted about the matter, but the incident is now under review.
Elsewhere in Potsdam, Kaiserslautern’s game against lower-league Eintracht Stahnsdorf saw a visiting player targeted by insults while warming up on the sidelines.
Security staff, assisted by nearby spectators, quickly identified the offender. Unlike in Leipzig, the game continued without delay, and Kaiserslautern secured a dominant 7-0 win.
Northeast German Football Association president Hermann Winkler urged caution, stating that full facts must be examined before judgments are made.
He explained that official match reports and police findings will be key in determining the scale of action.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino strongly condemned the incidents and demanded clear consequences for those responsible.
He stressed that racism must not be tolerated in football and said that world football authorities expect organizers and law enforcement to guarantee protection for players.
The DFB confirmed that both cases are now being processed through its supervisory committee, which will determine whether sanctions against the clubs are necessary.
The outcome of these investigations is expected to shape how future incidents of racism are handled in German competitions.
