The Reproach of the Nation: Abuja-Lokoja Road

The Abuja-Lokoja highway has become a symbol of Nigeria’s infrastructure woes and the government’s inability to deliver on promises. The contract for its construction dates back to the beginning of the fourth Republic, and despite numerous administrations coming and going, the project remains incomplete. The protracted delay is a testament to the cancerous corruption that has plagued our nation.

The Abuja-Lokoja road is more than just a transportation artery; it’s the backbone that connects the northern and southern parts of Nigeria. Its importance cannot be overstated. The road plays a critical role in facilitating trade, commerce, and social interactions between the different regions of the country. It is a vital link that holds the nation together, and its significance extends beyond just economic benefits.

Yet, the unending saga of this road’s construction has become an embarrassment to our nation. The current state of the road is unacceptable, with travelers facing unimaginable hardships, including the constant threat of kidnapping and armed robbery. The road has become a death trap, with numerous accidents and fatalities reported over the years.

The statistics on lives lost to road crashes and attacks on this road are alarming. Authorities seem to be counting the cost in lives and property, but it’s time for concrete action. The Nigerian government must take responsibility for the safety of its citizens and ensure that this critical infrastructure is completed without further delay.

The government’s lack of urgency and commitment to completing the project is appalling. Official statements and press releases have become the order of the day, but tangible action is what is needed. The government must demonstrate its commitment to completing this project and bringing relief to the millions of Nigerians who use this road daily.

The Abuja-Lokoja road is a national embarrassment, but it’s also an opportunity for the government to prove its resolve. The government must take immediate action to complete the road and ensure the safety of travelers. The lives of Nigerians are too precious to be sacrificed on the altar of corruption and inefficiency. It’s time for action, not rhetoric.

The government must also take steps to address the security challenges on the road. The constant threat of kidnapping and armed robbery is a serious concern that requires urgent attention. The government must deploy adequate security personnel and equipment to ensure the safety of travelers.

In conclusion, the Abuja-Lokoja road is a critical infrastructure that requires immediate attention. The government must take responsibility for completing the project and ensuring the safety of travelers. The lives of Nigerians are too precious to be sacrificed on the altar of corruption and inefficiency. It’s time for action, not rhetoric.
