COREN Inaugurates C’ttee On Engineers Act Amendment

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has inaugurated a Committee on the Amendment of the Engineers (Registration, etc.) Act 2018 (as Amended).

The inaugural meeting was held on Tuesday, 26th August 2025, at COREN Headquarters, Abuja, according to a statement signed by COREN Registrar, Prof. Okorie Uche.

In his welcome remarks, COREN President Prof. Sadiq Abubakar underscored the importance of the assignment, noting that the review of the Act is critical to strengthening engineering regulation, aligning with global best practices, and ensuring the profession remains responsive to emerging national and international realities.

The Committee, chaired by Engr Kamila Maliki, is composed of seasoned engineering practitioners, legal experts, and stakeholders in the engineering ecosystem.

The members are as follows:
Engr Kamila Maliki – Chairman,
Engr Ejikeme Mgbemena – Deputy Chairman, Engr (Mrs) Margaret Oguntala- Member, Rt. Hon. Dominic Udoatan– Member, Engr Isyaka Lawan – Member,
Engr Kam-selem Alhaji Bukar – Member,
Hon. Umar Maikunkele – Member, Engr Cyril Onyeneke– Member, Prof. Okorie A. Uche – Member, Barr. A. Amin, – Member, Engr. Barr. Folorunsho Oladoyin – Member, Engr Andrew Francis Onyilo – Secretary, and Barr. Arowolo Aituaje Precious – Asst. Secretary.

The Terms of Reference (ToR) mandate the Committee to: review the Engineers Act 2018 to identify strengths and gaps;
engage stakeholders across the engineering and allied sectors; benchmark findings against global best practices; and recommend amendments to enhance COREN’s regulatory powers, improve disciplinary frameworks, strengthen institutional autonomy, and provide sustainable support for key programmes such as the Engineering Residency Programme (ERP).

The committee is expected to submit its final report within three (3) months.

Concluding, COREN reiterate its commitment to safeguarding the practice of engineering in Nigeria by ensuring its regulatory instruments are robust, forward-looking, and globally competitive.
