A shooting occurred on Wednesday morning, August 27, 2025, at Annunciation Catholic School in south Minneapolis during a school Mass.
Multiple people were injured—estimates range from at least 14 to about 20—and authorities confirmed the shooter was no longer a threat.
The incident unfolded around 8:30 a.m. local time at the school, which serves pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and began classes just two days earlier. The pre-Mass start was scheduled for 8:15 a.m.
Police, state authorities, and federal agencies including the FBI and ATF quickly arrived on scene, joined by numerous ambulances.
The school building and nearby streets were evacuated.
The City of Minneapolis declared that the shooter had been “contained” and that there was no ongoing threat to the wider community.
Residents were advised to avoid the area between W. 54th Street, Lyndale, and Nicollet Avenue to allow emergency operations to proceed.
Governor Tim Walz, who was briefed on the unfolding situation, expressed deep concern for students and staff, noting the attack disrupted the opening days of the school year.
He continues to demand updates as information becomes available.
Minnesota’s Department of Homeland Security, led by Secretary Kristi Noem, said federal agencies are monitoring the tragedy, and President Donald Trump confirmed he had been briefed and pledged continued attention to the incident.
This shooting marks the latest in a wave of violence in Minneapolis, occurring amid several separate shootings over the previous 24 hours that left multiple people dead and others wounded.
