Rwanda Takes the Lead: Africa’s First Self-Flying Electric Air Taxi Debuts

Rwanda has made history by launching Africa’s first self-flying electric air taxi, a pilotless electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, in partnership with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and EHang Holdings Limited. The live demonstration at the Aviation Africa 2025 Summit in Kigali showcased the EH216-S electric air taxi, marking the continent’s first public flight of its kind.

“Rwanda is actively building a future where our cities are more connected and our economy is more dynamic through innovative transport solutions,” said Jimmy Gasore, Rwanda’s Minister of Infrastructure. This initiative solidifies Rwanda’s position as a hub for testing and implementing cutting-edge aviation technology.

The self-flying air taxi is designed to reduce traffic congestion, improve connectivity between communities, and offer environmentally friendly transport options. Huang Qilin, Director General of CRBC’s Rwanda Office, emphasized the company’s commitment to bringing cutting-edge solutions to Africa.

“Leveraging our global network and engineering strength, we look forward to working with Rwanda to explore the potential of the low-altitude economy and create new models for innovative development across the continent,” Qilin said.

This partnership aims to attract investors and technology partners to Rwanda’s emerging air mobility market, building on its successful history of pioneering drone delivery services. The EH216-S eVTOL aircraft has already been certified and operational in several countries, offering a glimpse into the future of pilotless air travel.

“Our partnership with CRBC provides a strong foundation to bring in new technologies and expertise. By collaborating on this historic flight, we are not only showcasing the future of aviation but also demonstrating our dedication to fostering a safe, progressive regulatory environment for Advanced Air Mobility,” a statement noted.

The Aviation Africa 2025 Summit, attended by over 2,000 delegates, features advanced air mobility showcases, discussions, and industry collaborations aimed at building a sustainable aviation future for Africa. Rwanda’s leadership in aviation innovation is underscored by its pioneering use of drones for delivery services and now welcoming air taxis, shaping the future of flight.
