A brazen daytime smash-and-grab robbery in San Jose, California, left an 88-year-old jewelry store owner injured and hospitalized after a vehicle was used to crash through the storefront.
San Jose police say the incident occurred just before 2 p.m. on Friday at Kim Hung Jewelry.
Surveillance footage shows an SUV reversing through the glass entrance, followed by approximately 16 hooded and masked suspects—some armed—rushing inside.
One assailant wielded a claw hammer to shatter display cases while another shoved the elderly owner to the ground, leading to injuries from broken glass and a reported stroke.
A friend confirmed the owner was treated in hospital, stabilized, and discharged by Sunday.
The thieves then looted jewelry and fled in multiple vehicles before police arrived. No arrests have been made, and suspects remain unidentified.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan reacted in fury on social media, calling the attack “appalling,” saying, “Watching this senior get assaulted made my blood boil,” and promising that the perpetrators will face the “harshest possible consequences.”
Local civic leaders and community members held a rally outside the crime scene, urging stronger protections for small businesses.
Damage to the store is estimated between $50,000 and $100,000, though the value of stolen items has not been disclosed.
