The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, into custody for questioning over alleged financial misconduct.
Kyari arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja at about 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, where he was grilled over financial and technical transactions linked to the controversial $7.2 billion refineries’ turnaround maintenance programme.
His interrogation comes just weeks after the anti-graft agency placed him on its watch list, amid a growing number of fraud allegations surrounding NNPCL operations during his tenure.
It will be recalled that the Federal High Court in Abuja recently ordered the temporary freezing of four bank accounts allegedly linked to Kyari, pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.
The EFCC has yet to issue an official statement on the progress of the probe.
