Police in Utah are carrying out a door-to-door search for the gunman who killed conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a student event at Utah Valley University.
The 31-year-old, founder of Turning Point USA, was shot once in the neck while speaking on campus before a crowd of thousands.
The shooting took place at midday, sending students running for cover. Officials said the attacker, dressed in black, is believed to have fired from a rooftop overlooking the outdoor gathering.
Authorities described the incident as a targeted act. Two people were detained for questioning but later released, with one facing an obstruction charge unrelated to the attack.
The campus remains locked down as heavily armed officers search nearby buildings. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as students fled.
Kirk’s family was present at the event when the shooting occurred.
Leaders across the US and abroad have condemned the attack, with flags ordered to be flown at half-staff on federal property.
Utah’s governor called the incident a political assassination, while federal officials confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
