The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a woman accused of abandoning her newborn baby in a bush in Akwanga Local Government Area.
The infant, wrapped in cloth, was discovered near a primary school on AA Koto Street on Wednesday by residents, who quickly alerted authorities. The baby was found alive.
Police spokesperson SP Ramhan Nansel confirmed the arrest on Thursday in Lafia.
He explained that the Commissioner of Police ordered the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for proper investigation and prosecution.
According to police findings, the suspect is a final-year student at the College of Education, Akwanga.
The case has sparked outrage among residents, who expressed shock and anger at the act.
Incidents of child abandonment have been reported in other parts of Nigeria. In July, a farmer in Kamba, Kebbi State, rescued a newborn who had been buried alive on his farmland.
The child was later placed in his custody by local authorities.
The recurring cases have deepened concerns about the rising trend of child abandonment in Nigeria, prompting calls for stronger social support systems, awareness, and legal measures to prevent such incidents.
