Authorities are intensifying the search for the sniper responsible for killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a campus event at Utah Valley University.
The FBI and state investigators say the suspect fired one shot, then jumped off a rooftop and fled into a nearby neighborhood. (Reuters)
Law enforcement recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle in a wooded area close to the path the shooter is believed to have taken.
Alongside the weapon, they also retrieved footprints, a palm print, and forearm imprints that could help link the gunman to the crime.
Surveillance footage and images released by investigators show a person of interest, described as being of college age, wearing dark clothing.
The footage captures the figure running across the roof, leaping off, then breaking into a nearby tree-line after the shot.
Authorities say they have received more than 7,000 tips so far, the most in a case of this type since the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.
Many tips are being followed up through interviews—over 200 have been conducted to date.
Charlie Kirk, age 31, was shot in the neck during a “Prove Me Wrong” event — part of his American Comeback Tour — in front of approximately 3,000 people. He was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.
The FBI has offered a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the individual responsible.
Officials have also warned the public about disinformation, including foreign attempts to spread false leads.
