Nepal has appointed former Supreme Court chief justice Sushila Karki as interim prime minister after days of unrest toppled the government.
The 73-year-old was sworn in following a deal between protest leaders and President Ram Chandra Poudel. She is the first woman to lead the country.
More than 50 people died this week when police clashed with demonstrators who rose up after a ban on social media platforms.
Although the ban was lifted, anger had already grown into a movement that set fire to parliament and government offices in Kathmandu, forcing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign.
Parliament has been dissolved, and fresh elections are scheduled for March 5 next year. Karki is expected to form a cabinet in the coming days.
She faces urgent tasks such as restoring order, rebuilding state institutions, and responding to demands from young protesters driving the movement.
The protests were fueled by frustration over corruption and the lifestyles of political families, which spread online before the ban.
Army patrols continue in the capital as Nepal recovers from its worst violence in decades.
