Two visually impaired students who went missing from a special school in Ebonyi State have been found in Enugu after three months. The teenagers, identified as 17-year-old Augustine Onwunyiruba, a Junior Secondary School 3 student, and 16-year-old Lawrence Onyenaturuchukwu, a Senior Secondary School 1 student, had left the Ebonyi State Special School of the Blind in Izzi Local Government Area on June 5.
They were discovered on September 11 in the Abakpa Nike area of Enugu, where they had been living on the streets and depending on begging to survive. Officials of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Ebonyi State confirmed that the two students were found in good health and were later reunited with their families.
The Ebonyi State Police Command also confirmed their recovery, noting that they were traced through contact made with one of the parents. According to the command, the students were handed over to their parents but are still expected to return for further questioning to understand the circumstances that led to their disappearance.
Parents of the children expressed relief and gratitude to the NHRC and the police for ensuring their safe return after months of worry.
