A pedestrian lost his life on Sunday after being struck by a Nissan Jeep at the Ogudu flyover bridge, inward Ifako, Lagos.
The vehicle, with registration number KJA 354 ET, attempted to flee the scene but was intercepted by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
According to LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the driver tried to escape instead of assisting the badly injured victim. Operatives who were stationed in the area quickly pursued and stopped the vehicle, preventing the suspect from evading arrest.
The injured pedestrian, who was immediately rushed for medical care, later died from the impact of the crash. The incident happened while the driver was trying to dodge a heavily loaded truck, causing him to lose control and hit the unsuspecting pedestrian.
LASTMA officials handed the driver over to the Ogudu Police Division. The police also joined in the rescue operation, while the damaged vehicle was taken to the station for further investigation.
Authorities warned motorists to avoid reckless driving, speeding, and dangerous manoeuvres that put the lives of pedestrians and other road users at risk.
