The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the November 2024 Ondo State governorship election, Chief Agboola Ajayi, has withdrawn his appeal before the Supreme Court against the election victory of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ajayi, who once served as the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, made the decision after consulting with his family, political allies, and legal advisers. He explained that continuing with the legal battle would not promote peace or good governance in the state. According to him, the stability and progress of Ondo State remain more important than political disputes.
His withdrawal formally brings an end to the months of legal battles that followed the November 2024 governorship poll. The development has also shifted the political climate in the state, reducing tension between the ruling party and the opposition.
Reacting to the move, the APC in Ondo described it as a welcome step. The party congratulated Governor Aiyedatiwa, his deputy Dr. Olaide Adelami, and the people of the state. Party leaders also commended the role of the judiciary, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and security agencies in the conduct of the election.
The APC urged opposition parties, including the PDP, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and the Allied People’s Movement (APM) whose candidates have also withdrawn their cases, to join hands with the governor in supporting the administration. The ruling party said collective efforts were needed to rebuild Ondo State and grow its economy.
