The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has confirmed the death of four senior staff members in the fire that broke out at Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos, on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the high-rise building that houses two of the agency’s offices on the sixth and seventh floors.
Those who lost their lives were identified as Mrs. Ekelikhostse George, an Assistant Director; Mr. David Sunday-Jatto, also an Assistant Director; Mrs. Nkem Onyemelukwe, a Senior Manager; and Mr. Peter Ifaranmaye, a Manager. The victims were trapped in their offices when thick smoke quickly spread through the floors, making escape difficult.
FIRS said its security team immediately contacted emergency services once the fire was detected, but the flames and smoke had already engulfed parts of the building before responders arrived. The management described the deaths as a painful loss, noting that the deceased were dedicated professionals who gave years of service to the agency.
The agency stated that it is in touch with the families of the victims and will provide all necessary support during this difficult period. It also noted that safety procedures across its offices nationwide will be reviewed to prevent a recurrence.
Emergency officials in Lagos have since begun investigating the cause of the fire. Witnesses said the blaze spread rapidly, trapping several occupants inside before rescue teams could reach them.
