Entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, better known as Charly Boy, has narrated how former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, once paid him an unexpected early morning visit carrying a “Ghana Must Go” bag filled with local snacks.
Charly Boy shared the story on Friday in a Facebook post, recalling that Obi called him around 1 a.m. to say he wanted to stop by his home at about 5:30 or 6 a.m. The activist agreed, and Obi arrived on time.
According to him, when he came downstairs to welcome the politician, he was surprised to see a large bag placed in his sitting room. After greeting Obi, the two men sat together for almost two hours discussing politics, family, and the state of the country.
When Obi was about to leave, he presented the bag as a gift. Out of courtesy, Charly Boy thanked him without checking what was inside. Later, when he opened the bag, he found it packed with roasted groundnuts, kola nuts, alligator pepper, bananas, mangoes, oranges, pawpaw, and other local fruits.
Charly Boy said he laughed in surprise and later called Obi to express his gratitude. The former governor reportedly told him that while he could not give him money, he brought the items as a personal gift he handpicked himself.
The entertainer explained that the gesture touched him deeply, noting that the simple offering meant more to him than money. He added that such moments remind people that life is not always as hard as it seems.
Charly Boy has been a known supporter of Obi and has openly shown his admiration for him. In 2023, he publicly pledged to celebrate in unusual fashion if Obi had won his election petition. On Charly Boy’s birthday that same year, Obi praised him for being a fearless voice who holds leaders accountable.
