The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for questioning why birthday donations were made to the National Library.
The party expressed its displeasure in a statement released on Sunday by its spokesperson, Seye Oladejo.
According to the APC, public institutions around the world often receive private support, endowments, and donations, which serve as an additional source of help alongside government efforts. The party explained that such acts of giving reflect a shared responsibility in building society and should be welcomed.
The Lagos APC maintained that instead of commending citizens who contributed to the National Library, Obi turned the matter into a political issue. The party accused him of showing inconsistency, recalling that as governor of Anambra State, schools and hospitals in his administration benefited from private and church-based contributions. It questioned why Obi, who accepted such support at the state level, would criticise it when it involved a national institution.
The statement further noted that while President Bola Tinubu is working on reforms to strengthen public institutions and the economy, Obi continues to dwell on comments that serve only political interests.
The APC urged Nigerians to disregard Obi’s position on the matter, stressing that supporting the National Library through donations should be seen as a positive act that contributes to the growth of the country’s institutions.
